I’ve just released version 1.4 of BuddyPress Docs, my collaborative editing plugin for BuddyPress. The big new feature is the one that users have been asking for since the plugin was first released: file attachments. I’m using a nifty trick (involving the autogeneration of .htaccess files) to ensure that Doc privacy levels are extended to their attachments. I think it’s going to be useful to a lot of people.
In the future, I plan to write a tool to migrate content created by the abandoned BP Group Documents to this new system. Stay tuned.
This round of development was generously sponsored by the Center for Applied Research and Environmental Systems at the University of Missouri. They are long-time users of BuddyPress, and they were pleased to support the development of this feature for the community. Special thanks to David Cavins, who set up the connection between me and CARES, and also contributed huge amounts of technical, conceptual, and design help to Docs 1.4. (He also builds beautiful guitars.) Thanks to CARES and to David!
Thanks for the kind words, Boone. It has been a real pleasure to work with you on extending your already fantastic plugin. (Boone’s full of great ideas, and he writes code like the wind.) I’m excited to see where BP-Docs will go next.
We’ll be using the new BP-Docs on http://www.communitycommons.org, a site dedicated to helping local, regional and national organizations work together to improve community health and social services. The BuddyPress and BP-Docs components are what makes that collaboration possible, and will have a direct effect on the health and well-being of people across the country.
Also, thank you to the BuddyPress community for making BP a rich, flexible plugin and especially to the volunteers who put in something like a zillion hours in the support forums.
Thank you, Boone, CARES, and David, for making this important work happen. Bye, bye, Group Documents.
I’m using two buddypress themes – salutation and razor – both themes are not working with the new update of buddypress docs. Salutation doesn’t show the homepage and razor doesn’t show the home page slide show. I’ve deactivated the plugin and all is working fine now.
Do you know what is causing the hiccup?
Fiona – If you open a ticket at http://github.com/boonebgorges/buddypress-docs/issues with a full description of the problem (including a more detailed explanation of what “doesn’t show the homepage” and “doesn’t show the home page slide show” mean), I can try to look at it. Thanks.
Hi thanks for the reply – just updated with the 1.4.1 version and it is all working fine now – thanks.
…Fiona
In 1.4.2 is a bug, the titlefield is noch writeable.
User are not able to add a title for a new doc.
Thanks for the kind words, Salutation doesn’t show the homepage and razor doesn’t show the home page slide show. http://cpbay.com/
